The Bay: A Naturalist Discovers a Universe of Life Above and Below the Chesapeake
Published in Paperback by Johns Hopkins Univ Pr (October, 1984)
Authors: Gilbert C. Klingel and Natalie H. Davis
Average review score:

What a gem of a book!
An entire ecosystem is revealed in this work; a look inside a true "natural wonder", the Chesapeake Bay. I picked up this nature/local interest book at a small store on Smith Island, Maryland, and began reading it on the boat trip back to Crisfield. I found "The Bay" to be a surprising page-turner -- along with detailed descriptions of the life cycles of familiar wildlife such as ospreys, eagles and great blue herons, and the ubiquitous Maryland blue crabs and jellyfish, there are facets of bay life in this book which I'd never even considered -- sea creatures that light up with natural phosphorescence, animals that regress as they develop from infancy to adulthood, and one beautifully descriptive chapter entitled "The Chesapeake Marshes" which came alive as I read it! I loved this book! One need not be a scientist nor a naturalist to appreciate this superbly written tribute to one of the most beautiful places on earth. The final chapter, "Compensation", clearly illustrates the symbiotic relationships of living creatures within an ecosystem and their interdependence upon one another for the continuation of life, not only in the Chesapeake Bay region, but as a representation of life systems everywhere. The writing was spellbinding; Mr. Klingel wrote so well that I found myself reading on and on for the sheer pleasure of experiencing his words. Although "The Bay" was written nearly 50 years ago, its story is as timeless as the nature it so aptly describes.

The Best Beak in Boonaroo Bay
Published in Hardcover by Fulcrum Pub (September, 1995)

A CLEVER CONTEST
.

This book was shortlisted for the 1994 "Picture Book of the Year Award". If your child is a budding birder here's a book that will both entertain, as well as inform.

Boonaroo Bay is normally a peaceful place but one day the spoonbill, the darter, the cormorant, the curlew and the oystercatcher had a big dispute over who had the best beak in the Bay. But luckily Pelican who is the wisest of the birds was watching this noisy argument and decided to hold a contest to settle the question.

The contest was very cleverly devised since there were five events: - collect shrimp from the mud....spearing fish......extract a pipi (clam) from its shell....find a worm in the sand....and finally catch a slithery eel.

Each bird won the event for which its beak was best suited. This is a very good lesson in life.

Narelle Oliver is both author and illustrator. Her linocut illustrations although very bold contain lots of subtle detail with accurate representations of the characteristics of each of the bird species.

This book would appeal to all children who are developing a love of birding.

Blues Across the Bay (Going to)
Published in Paperback by Four Corners Pub Co Inc (November, 2001)
Author: Whitney Stewart
Average review score:

Engaging story with great characters
I've been a fan of Whitney Stewart's biographies for some time, and now have thoroughly enjoyed both of her novels, this one and Jammin' on the Avenue. The books contain rich characterizations against city backdrops in this unique fiction/travel series. The books showcase cities [Blues Across the Bay - San Francisco; Jammin on the Avenue - New Orleans] through stories, with travel information included. Eric Weiman is a strong character--a good-hearted kid without being sappy. I especially appreciated the subtle relationship between Eric and his friend Lashley, who also appears in Jammin' on the Avenue, (the prequel to Blues Across the Bay.) These books will be special favorites to young guitar-playing readers, as in both books, Massachusetts' dwelling Eric is pursuing his dream to play guitar professionally at a contest [Jammin] and a summer guitar camp [Blues].

Carolina Bays : an Annotated and Comprehensive Bibliography, 1844-2000
Published in Paperback by Carolina Pr (01 December, 2000)
Author: Thomas E. Ross
Average review score:

Carolina bays are nature's great mystery
Carolina bays are the greatest natural mystery of the eastern United States and have been the subject of much conjecture about how they were formed. Ross' "Carolina bays" gives the reader a succinct review and description of Carolina bays and a concise review of the many theories of origin. As a student of the natural landscape and nature, I have found this little book to be invaluable in enhancing my knowledge of Carolina bays. It is especially good to have under one cover a listing of all known publications dealing with Carolina bays and a good description of how each publication addresses a Carolina bay issue, whether it is about their origin, their cultural geography, their plant life, their soils, their vegetation, etc. Every person studying ecology, environment, and/or geomorphology of the southeastern United States should gain access to this invaluable research tool. I strongly recommend it for all University libraries and for private libraries of earth scientists in the above disciplines.
